The type species Polybranchiaspis liaojashanensis was first described by Yuhai Liu in 1965, followed by systematic studies by Chinese teams.

Internal anatomy of the polybranchiaspids (Agnatha, Galeaspida)

Nature · 1979

Summary based on the inspected sections of the downloaded publication.

Key findings

Mineral replicas of polybranchiaspid brain cavities, nerves and vessels enabled comparisons with lampreys, hagfishes and other armoured jawless vertebrates.

结论 Conclusions

The author recognized galeaspids as a distinct group and proposed links with lampreys and osteostracans; this 1979 interpretation requires later phylogenetic context.

Analysis concerns early jawless and jawed vertebrate radiations, not a direct description of Polybranchiaspis.

Key findings

New databases of Palaeozoic vertebrate occurrences, biogeography and ecosystems indicate parallel endemic radiations of jawed and related jawless vertebrates after the Late Ordovician mass extinction. Recovery took place in isolated refugia and included a prolonged low-diversity interval.

结论 Conclusions

Mass extinction and subsequent geographical isolation helped structure early vertebrate diversification. Ecological recovery and dispersal constraints may explain why jawed vertebrates became dominant long after jaws first appeared.
