\nBatoidea\nJaws and Gill Arches: A Shared Developmental Plan\nBatoids are cartilaginous fishes. Their jaw and pharyngeal-arch \nskeletons retain the basic regional organization of the gnathostome \npharyngeal skeleton, making them valuable living comparative \nmaterial for studying the development and evolution of jaws and \npharyngeal arches. During embryonic development in jawed \nvertebrates, the first pharyngeal arch, or mandibular arch, gives rise \nto the supporting structures of the jaws; in chondrichthyans, its \nprincipal dorsal and ventral cartilages are the palatoquadrate and \nMeckel's cartilage, respectively. The second pharyngeal arch forms \nthe hyoid arch; in batoids, the hyomandibular cartilage contributes to \njaw suspension, and the jaws typically do not articulate directly with \nthe neurocranium. Studies of batoid embryos show that the \nmandibular, hyoid, and gill arches share multiple dorsoventral \npatterning mechanisms, indicating that jaws and gill arches are built \nupon related developmental rameworks. The evolution of movable \njaws expanded the ways in which vertebrates could capture and \nprocess food and was a major structural innovation in the early \nevolution of jawed vertebrates.",
