\nAfrican lungfish\nA Group of Drought-Adapted Living Lungfish\nThere are six extant species of lungfish belonging to three \ngenera. The genus Protopterus (African lungfishes) \nincludes four living species, widely distributed in freshwater \nhabitats across tropical Africa, including swamps, \nwetlands, slow-flowing rivers, and seasonally flooded \nplains. With an elongated, eel-like body, African lungfishes \npossess small round scales and small eyes and strong \ntooth plates adapted for crushing hard food items. Their \npectoral and pelvic fins are elongated and filamentous, \nsupported by well-developed muscles, allowing them to \nprop up their bodies underwater and perform a form of \n“walking-like” locomotion underwater or on muddy \nsurfaces. African lungfishes possess highly developed \nlungs and are carnivorous fishes that rely primarily on air \nbreathing. During the dry season, they can burrow into \nmud and secrete mucus to form a protective “cocoon,” \nentering a state of dormancy with reduced metabolism \nand surviving prolonged periods of drought.",
