It belongs to an ancient lineage of gymnosperms and is characterized by its distinctive fan-shaped leaves, dichotomous venation, and dioecious reproductive system. Ginkgoales were once widely distributed in terrestrial ecosystems during the Mesozoic, and modern ginkgo retains many important morphological features of this ancient group. Due to its long evolutionary history and unique biological characteristics, ginkgo is often referred to as a “living fossil.” Today, ginkgo is native to China and has been widely cultivated around the world.
