Polypterus
A Living Relict of an Early-Diverging Actinopterygian Lineage
Bichirs (Polypterus) are among the earliest-diverging lineages 
of extant ray-finned fishes and retain several distinctive 
morphological features, including rhomboid ganoid scales, a 
dorsal fin composed of multiple separate finlets, and paired 
lungs used for air breathing. These features provide important 
clues to the body plan, ecological adaptations, and 
evolutionary history of early actinopterygians.
