It had an elongated fusiform body, a nearly rounded posterior margin of the caudal fin, and a body covered with hard rhomboid ganoid scales, reaching a maximum length of approximately 5 cm. As a small ray-finned fish from the Luoping Biota, Diandongichthys ocellatus provides important evidence for understanding the origin and early morphological evolution of ginglymodians, as well as the diversification history of gar-related lineages.
