\nEudontomyzon morii\nAn Important Living Representative of Jawless Vertebrates\nEudontomyzon morii has a slender, elongate body and lacks \npaired fins and jaws. Seven pairs of gill openings are \narranged along the sides of the head, a characteristic feature \nof lampreys. The larvae live buried in sandy or muddy \nsubstrates, whereas adults inhabit freshwater streams and \nrivers. As a living jawless vertebrate, Eudontomyzon morii \nretains a combination of ancestral vertebrate features and \nhighly specialized characteristics that evolved during the \nlong independent history of lampreys. Studies of its genomes, \nneural crest development, nervous system and immune \nsystem provide important comparative information for \nunderstanding the origin and early evolution of key \nvertebrate traits.",
